NIOS – National Institute of Open Schooling

NIOS Syllabus – The National Institute of Open Schooling was previously named the National Open School (NOS). It is an autonomous educational board of school education in India. Renowned globally for its extensive open schooling system, it offers a wide array of courses following a standard educational framework, ensuring students receive high-quality education.

In November 1989, the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) established itself with the primary objective of providing a world-class standard in education.

The NIOS conducts Public Examinations and provides Secondary and Senior Secondary Level Certificates, equivalent to the credentials provided by any other Board of School Education. This is because all Boards of Education adhere to the curriculum framework established by NCERT, the National Council of Educational Research and Training.

The Scheme of Studies

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) provides the following courses:

Open Basic Education (OBE) :

The Open Basic Education (OBE) program was launched in 1994 as an alternative method of open schooling to offer primary and middle education.

OBE is an equivalency program and provides three-tier education under the OBE program.

  • Level A – It is equivalent to Classes 1 to 3.

NIOS offers three primary subjects at the A-Level: Environmental Studies (EVS), Mathematics, and Basic Computer Skills.

  • Level B – It is equivalent to Classes 4 to 5.

NIOS offers three primary subjects at the A-Level: Environmental Studies (EVS), Mathematics, and Basic Computer Skills.

  • Level C – It is equivalent to Classes 6 to 8.

At the C Level, NIOS provides five main subjects – English Language, Maths, Science, Social Science, and Basic Computer Skills.

Secondary Education :

The NIOS secondary course is equivalent to Class 10.

For secondary education, students need to study a minimum of five subjects, including at least one language or two languages, which are mandatory for certification.

Here, students must choose a minimum of one and a maximum of two languages from Group A and select other subjects from Group B.

Senior Secondary Education :

The NIOS senior secondary course is equivalent to Classes 11 and 12.

In the senior secondary course of education, students must study a minimum of five subjects and can choose up to a maximum of seven subjects. Students are allowed to choose a minimum of one and a maximum of two languages from Group A  and other subjects from Groups B, C, D, E, and F as per their interests and future career plans.

Note: Students have the option to choose any one subject from Groups C, D, E, and F.
