We often say India’s youth are its greatest strength – the builders of tomorrow.
But what if that strength erodes slowly & steadily – not by war, not by poverty, but by intoxication?
The rise of Drug Addiction in India is not just a health issue; it is a social, moral, and political crisis. From alcohol sold on every street corner to synthetic drugs flooding college campuses, India’s young generation is being trapped in a cycle of dependence and destruction.
So the question is – why is India, a land known for its culture and discipline, falling into the trap of drugs and alcohol?
The Scale of the Crisis: Numbers That Should Shake the Nation
- Nearly 100 million people in India are affected by narcotics or substance use disorders.
- About 16 crore Indians (14.6%) consume alcohol regularly, and 5.2% are alcohol dependent – that’s over 8 crore people struggling with addiction.
Despite these alarming statistics, the state response remains insufficient.
India’s National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) budget rose from ₹100 crore in 2018–19 to ₹450 crore in FY 2024–25. Yet, only 30% of de-addiction centers meet operational standards.
This is the sad result of years of ignoring the problem.
Why Is Drug Addiction Rising in India?
The reasons are many, and most of them are man-made.
- Easy Availability Everywhere
Drugs and alcohol are now easier to find than safe drinking water in many towns. From small villages to big cities, alcohol shops are open in every street. For many youths, liquor and drugs are just another part of social life. - Stress, Unemployment, and Frustration
Millions of young people finish college every year with dreams but no jobs. Depression, peer pressure, and social competition push many into addiction as an escape. - Cultural Glamorization
Films, songs, and social media often show drinking and smoking as symbols of style and confidence. Young minds, desperate to fit in, mistake destruction for enjoyment. - Weak Laws and Poor Enforcement
Even though the NDPS Act exists, drug peddlers operate freely. Police crackdowns happen occasionally, but the network quickly returns because demand is rising faster than control. - Government Contradiction
The biggest irony lies here — the same government that warns people about addiction runs thousands of liquor shops and earns crores from it every day. In fact, in States like Tamil Nadu, the Government Budget depends on Liquor (scale) Income.
Tamil Nadu’s Double Standard: Revenue or Responsibility?
Tamil Nadu — a state proud of its social justice history — today faces a disturbing contradiction.
On one side, the government earns over ₹56,000 crore annually through TASMAC liquor sales; on the other, it allocates just ₹20 crore for de-addiction centres.
Recently, the State steeply raised FL2 Licenses, adding fuel to the fire.
Every street has a wine shop, but few towns have a working rehabilitation centre.
Liquor advertisements may be banned, but liquor is glorified through every wedding, film, and festival.
The message is clear: consumption is encouraged, recovery is ignored.
Most of the Crimes, Violence, and related activities are due to the free of legal as well as illegal liquor.
Is this governance or exploitation?
Alcoholism is not merely an individual failure — it’s a collective breakdown of policy and ethics. When the state depends on intoxication for income, morality becomes collateral damage.
The drug addiction in India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, thrives on this moral compromise — where revenue triumphs over reform.
The Hidden Victims: Women, Children, and Families
Behind every statistic lies a shattered home.
Domestic violence, marital abuse, and child neglect often stem from substance dependency.
Hospitals across Tamil Nadu report that a major share of domestic violence and road accidents involve alcohol or drugs.
Children in such households grow up fearing both silence and noise.
Wives endure the daily humiliation of watching the man they love turn into a stranger under intoxication.
And yet, the social stigma of addiction keeps most families quiet — until tragedy strikes.
Is this the society we’re proud of building?
Where Are the Preventive Measures?
Yes, there are laws, campaigns, and slogans – but how effective are they?
- Government-run de-addiction centres are few and poorly maintained.
- School awareness programs happen once a year, mostly for formality.
- NGOs work tirelessly, but without enough support or funds.
- Police raids catch small peddlers, while the bigger networks remain untouched.
The fight against drug addiction in India cannot succeed unless the government, society, and youth all act together – honestly and consistently.
A Question to the Government
If the state can open thousands of liquor shops, why can’t it open free rehabilitation centres in every district?
If advertisements for alcohol are banned, why are film scenes still filled with bottles and bars?
If the government truly cares about public health, why is its biggest source of income coming from people’s addiction?
It is time for the rulers to choose – money or morality.
A government cannot claim to build a welfare state while selling poison on every street.
A Question to the Youth
And to our young generation – the real strength of India:
Why surrender your freedom to a substance that controls your mind?
No one becomes brave or successful by getting drunk or high. Real strength lies in saying no when the world tempts you to say yes.
Every time you reject a drug, you are standing against a billion-rupee industry built to destroy you.
You are protecting your dreams, your family, and your future.
It’s time for both the rulers and the ruled to wake up.
