TNPSC Group 4 Subject-wise Weightage: What to Study First?

Published – October 13, 2026

Should you spend more time studying Science, History, General Tamil or Aptitude for TNPSC Group 4?

When the syllabus covers several subjects, deciding where to begin can be confusing. The TNPSC Group 4 subject-wise weightage helps you understand which sections carry more questions and where to focus your preparation.

The key is to give enough attention to high-weightage subjects without leaving smaller units completely untouched.

The TNPSC Group 4 written examination has 200 objective-type questions for 300 marks. The paper is divided into three sections.

SubjectQuestionsWeightage
General Tamil10050%
General Studies7537.5%
Aptitude & Mental Ability2512.5%
Total200100%

General Tamil accounts for half the paper. Candidates must also secure at least 60 out of 150 marks in this section for the remaining part to be evaluated.

This makes Tamil an essential part of daily preparation, even for candidates who are confident in General Studies.

The General Studies section contains 75 questions across six units.

Tamil Nadu History, Culture & Socio-Political Movements20
Indian Polity15
Indian History & National Movement10
General Science5
Geography5
Total75

Tamil Nadu History and Culture, along with Indian Economy and Development Administration, have the highest individual allocations.

Together with Indian Polity, these subjects account for 55 of the 75 General Studies questions.

What does this mean for preparation?

Students should set aside more revision time for these three areas. However, this is not a reason to ignore Indian History, Science or Geography.

General Tamil contains 100 questions divided into seven units.

General Tamil TopicQuestions
Grammar25
Vocabulary15
Writing Skills15
Technical Terms10
Reading Comprehension15
Translation5
Literature, Tamil Scholars & Tamil Service15
Total100

Grammar has the highest allocation, with 25 questions.

Begin with grammar fundamentals and practise vocabulary, sentence correction and reading comprehension regularly.

Literature also deserves attention, particularly the prescribed Thirukkural chapters and contributions of Tamil scholars.

The Aptitude section contains 25 questions:

Numerical Ability – 15 questions: Percentages, simplification, HCF, LCM, ratio, interest, area, volume, and time and work.

Reasoning – 10 questions: Number series, puzzles, dice, visual reasoning and logical reasoning.

Unlike subjects that involve substantial reading, Aptitude requires repeated problem-solving.

Even 20–30 minutes of regular practice can help candidates build speed and accuracy.

Question weightage is useful, but your preparation order should also depend on your strengths and weaknesses.

1. Build a strong General Tamil foundation

Tamil has the largest question allocation and a qualifying requirement. Include grammar, vocabulary and literature in your regular study schedule.

2. Focus on higher-weightage General Studies units

Spend additional time on Tamil Nadu History and Culture, Indian Economy and Development Administration, and Indian Polity.

3. Practise Aptitude consistently

Solve a few numerical and reasoning questions each day instead of leaving the entire section until the end.

4. Cover the remaining General Studies subjects

Include Science, Geography and Indian History in your weekly revision.

These are suggested study priorities based on the syllabus, not an official TNPSC preparation order.

General Science has an allocation of five questions, which is lower than Indian Polity or Tamil Nadu History.

However, skipping Science completely could mean losing marks on questions you might otherwise answer correctly.

For example, if you perform well in Tamil but frequently answer Science questions incorrectly, spend additional time revising basic Physics, Chemistry and Biology concepts.

Your weak subjects matter just as much as the question distribution when planning revision.

Here is a sample timetable for candidates preparing four hours a day.

SubjectDaily Study Time
General Tamil1 hour 30 minutes
High-weightage General Studies1 hour 15 minutes
Other General Studies subjects45 minutes
Aptitude & Mental Ability30 minutes
Total4 hours

This is an example, not a fixed schedule. Adjust your study time after reviewing your mock-test results.

1. Which subject carries the most questions in TNPSC Group 4?

General Tamil has the highest overall allocation, with 100 questions.

2. How many Science questions are there in TNPSC Group 4?

The syllabus allocates five questions to General Science. It does not prescribe a separate fixed count for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

3. Which General Studies units have the highest weightage?

Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu, and Tamil Nadu History and Culture each have 20 questions.

4. Can I pass TNPSC Group 4 by studying only high-weightage subjects?

Concentrating on high-weightage subjects can help organise revision, but the complete syllabus should be covered. Your final score depends on performance across the examination.
