The UGC NET eligibility criteria require General and General-EWS candidates to have at least 55% marks in a recognised master’s degree, while eligible OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and third gender candidates need 50%.
Candidates with qualifying four-year bachelor’s degrees and students awaiting their postgraduate results may also apply under specific conditions. The age limit depends on whether they are applying for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission.
UGC NET Educational Qualification
Candidates with a master’s degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised university or institution can apply for UGC NET if they meet the minimum marks required for their category.
| Category | Minimum Master’s Degree Marks |
| General / Unreserved | 55% |
| General-EWS | 55% |
| OBC – Non-Creamy Layer | 50% |
| SC / ST | 50% |
| PwD / PwBD | 50% |
| Third gender | 50% |
The minimum percentage is calculated without rounding off. For example, 54.9% does not meet the 55% requirement.
Candidates should normally choose the UGC NET subject corresponding to their postgraduate degree. If that subject is not available in the official subject list, NTA permits candidates to choose a related subject.
Can Final-Year Postgraduate Students Apply for UGC NET?
Yes. Students pursuing the final year of their master’s degree, awaiting results or experiencing delays in their qualifying examination can apply provisionally.
However, they must complete their degree with the required percentage of marks.
- JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility: The qualifying master’s degree must be completed within two years of the NET result.
- PhD admission only: The qualifying master’s degree must be completed within one year of the NET result.
Candidates who fail to meet these conditions within the prescribed period will lose their provisional eligibility.
Can Students With a Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree Apply?
Yes. Students who have completed a four-year or eight-semester bachelor’s degree can apply through a separate eligibility route.
The minimum marks are:
| Category | Minimum Marks in Four-Year Degree |
| General / Unreserved | 75% |
| Eligible SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and disability categories | 70%, where the permitted 5% relaxation applies |
Equivalent grades may be considered under the applicable university grading system.
Students in the final year of an eligible four-year degree can also apply provisionally, subject to meeting the required conditions after graduation.
Important: Candidates qualifying through this four-year bachelor’s degree route can become eligible for JRF and PhD admission, but not for appointment as Assistant Professor on the basis of that qualification alone.
For this route, candidates may select a UGC NET subject in which they intend to pursue a PhD, even if their undergraduate degree is in another discipline.
UGC NET Age Limit
The age limit differs according to the candidate’s intended qualification.
| UGC NET purpose | Upper age limit |
| Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) | 30 years, subject to relaxation |
| Assistant Professor | No upper age limit |
| PhD admission | No upper age limit |
For UGC NET December 2026, NTA specifies 1 December 2026 as the reference date for calculating JRF age eligibility.
This means candidates above 30 years of age may still appear for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission, provided they meet the educational qualification requirements.
UGC NET JRF Age Relaxation
NTA provides age relaxation for eligible categories and candidates with specified qualifications or experience.
| Category or condition | Age relaxation |
| OBC-NCL (Central List) | Up to 5 years |
| SC / ST | Up to 5 years |
| PwD / PwBD | Up to 5 years |
| Third gender | Up to 5 years |
| Women applicants | Up to 5 years |
| Candidates with eligible research experience | Based on qualifying experience, up to 5 years |
| Candidates holding an LL.M. degree | 3 years |
| Eligible former armed forces personnel | Up to 5 years, subject to service conditions |
The total JRF age relaxation cannot exceed five years, even when a candidate qualifies under more than one provision.
Research-experience relaxation requires supporting certification from an eligible authority. Research undertaken towards completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree does not qualify for this provision.
UGC NET Eligibility for OBC Candidates
OBC candidates who qualify under the Central OBC Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) category can receive the prescribed relaxation in master’s degree marks and the JRF age limit.
For this category:
- Minimum master’s degree marks: 50%
- Minimum four-year bachelor’s degree marks: 70%, where the relaxation applies
- JRF age relaxation: Up to five years
Important: Being listed as BC, MBC or OBC under a state government’s classification does not automatically establish eligibility for central OBC-NCL benefits.
Candidates must check whether their community appears in the Central OBC List and whether they satisfy the Non-Creamy Layer requirements.
Candidates who do not qualify under the Central OBC-NCL category must follow the applicable unreserved-category conditions unless they qualify under another recognised category.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I apply for UGC NET with 50% marks in my master’s degree?
Yes, if you belong to an eligible category such as OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD or third gender. General and General-EWS candidates normally require at least 55%.
2. Is there an age limit for UGC NET Assistant Professor eligibility?
No. NTA does not prescribe an upper age limit for candidates appearing for Assistant Professor eligibility.
3. Can I apply for UGC NET after a three-year bachelor’s degree?
A three-year bachelor’s degree alone does not satisfy the standard UGC NET eligibility requirement. Candidates generally need a qualifying master’s degree or must meet the separate four-year undergraduate degree provisions.
4. Can students awaiting their master’s degree results apply?
Yes. They can apply provisionally but must complete their qualifying degree with the required marks within the prescribed period.
