The Election Commission of India has launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2025 to ensure that every eligible citizen’s name appears correctly in the voter list in Tamil Nadu. What Is Special Intensive Revision (SIR)?
The Special Intensive Revision is an important exercise conducted periodically by the Election Commission to clean and update the electoral roll. From 1951 to 2004, eight such revisions were carried out, with the last one in 2002–2004. Over the years, issues such as unremoved deceased voters, migrants not updated, and multiple registrations have created serious inaccuracies.
The 2025 SIR aims to fix all these problems and prepare a transparent and verified voter list in Tamil Nadu.
How the Verification Process Works
Starting November 4, 2025, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will begin a house-to-house enumeration. Each household will receive pre-printed enumeration forms that already include voter details such as:
- Name, address, and voter ID number
- Constituency and part number
- Serial number and QR code
- A pre-printed old photograph
Voters must check the details carefully and keep the following ready:
- Attach a new colour photograph
- Update details like Aadhaar number, mobile number, date of birth, and parent/spouse information
If corrections or deletions are needed, voters can use the following forms:
- The Form 6 – For new voter registration
- Form 7 – To delete names of deceased or duplicate voters
- Form 8 – To correct errors or update the address
Every home will be visited three times to ensure no voter is missed.
Tamil Nadu Voter List Correction Made Easier
To make the Tamil Nadu voter list correction smoother, the Election Commission has enabled an online platform – https://voters.eci.gov.in.
Urban and migrant voters can log in, download their pre-filled forms, and upload corrected information without waiting for BLO visits.
No additional documents are needed during verification — only the official enumeration form is required.
Voter List Update and Rationalisation
To improve accessibility, each polling station will be limited to 1,200 voters. The department will rationalize polling stations to ensure that voters don’t travel more than 2 km or cross natural barriers.
Nearly 77,000 officials will be engaged in this process, including:
- 38 District Election Officers
- 234 Electoral Registration Officers
- 624 Assistant EROs
- 7,234 Supervisors
- 68,472 Booth Level Officers
